Do animals size adapt to surroundings?

If you had a baby alligator in captivity (say a 12x12 room) , and a baby alligator in the wild, would one grow to be larger then the other? i feel as though the alligator in captivity would adapt to its smaller surroundings and not grow to be as large. am i correct?
