In the novel The Great Gastby, why doesn't Gatsby make umptions about others?

Gatsby does make umptions about others! That is the main theme of the entire book. He creates an ideal version of Daisy that is completely innaccurate from what she's really like. The entire book is based around the fact that Gatsby has a false understanding of who Daisy really is.
